Date: December 30, 2007
Location: NEW YORK

The Big Red battled back from a 10 point second half deficit, tying the game on two occasions, but down the stretch John Jay College managed to stave off the feisty Denison men for a 73-69 win in the consolation game of the NYU Holiday Tournament.

With 15 minutes left to play in the second half NYU took their largest lead of the period (10 points) after a fast break jumper by Vaughn Mason.  Over the next seven minutes the Big Red would slowly chip away at the lead, finally tying the contest with 8:20 to play thanks to a 3-pointer by senior Brian Elder (Granville, Ohio/Watkins Memorial).  On their next trip down the floor, Mason would counter with a 3-pointer of his own, pushing their lead back to three at 54-51.

Still trailing by three with just under three minutes to play, sophomore Jack Twyman (Rye, N.Y./Rye) knocked down a jumper off an assist by Pat Sullivan (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) but John Jay retailiated with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes of play to lock up the victory.

Elder finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes off the bench.  He was 11-for-12 from the free throw line and was named to the All-Tournament team after scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in two games.

Sullivan led the team with 17 points off a 5-for-14 shooting performance.  He also chipped in five rebounds and three assists while playing 39 minutes.  Also reaching double-figures for Denison was Jeremy Stuhlfauth (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) with 12 points.  Sophomore Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) scored 11 points and Chris Eberst (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) chipped in 10 points.

John Jay was led by Alex Valerio's 12 points while Mason added 13 points and six rebounds.

DU shot 39 percent from the field and hit 23-of-27 free throws.  They were outrebounded 36-33 but committed just 10 turnovers in the game.

The Big Red will return from the Big Apple tomorrow and ready themselves for a Jan. 2 home game versus North Coast Athletic Conference opponent, Wittenberg at 7:30 p.m.
