Men's Basketball: Senior day upset bid falls short

Caleb McFerren scored 14 points on Saturday versus Wabash.

Date: February 23, 2008
Location: GRANVILLE

Aaron Brock scored 21 points and Andrew Zimmer added 20 as Wabash College held off the Denison Big Red on senior day at Livingston Gymnasium, 86-75.

Denison trailed by just six at intermission and put together a number of runs in the second half that kept the final outcome in doubt till the final seconds.  Senior Chris Eberst (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes), fresh off his 21-point outing on Wednesday versus Earlham, drilled two straight 3-pointers early in the second half to cut the Wabash lead to one at 50-49.  With just under 15 minutes left the Little Giants began to piece together a 9-0 run fueled by two Andrew Gilman treys that pushed their lead back out to 11 with 11:50 remaining.

A pair of Jeremy Stuhlfauth (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) free throws would cut the Wabash lead back down to five with 8:39 to go but that would be as close as the Big Red would get.  Eberst led Denison with 17 points and was 5-for-10 from 3-point range.  Over the last two games Eberst was 12-for-23 from beyond the arc and totaled 38 points.

Sophomore Caleb McFerren (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) scored 14 points off his ability to get into the lane and to the free throw line.  McFerren was 4-for-8 from the field and hit six free throws in 28 minutes.

Freshman Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Twp.) bounced back with a strong game off the bench, scoring 13 points and adding five rebounds while going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.  Rounding out Denison's double digit scorers was senior Brian Elder (Granville, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) who scored 11 points off a 4-for-7 shooting performance.  Elder, Eberst Tom Perkins (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and Brian Gognat (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge) were all honored prior to today's game for their four years of service to the men's basketball program.  Gognat, who remains heavily braced, saw just under one minute of action late in the game after missing all of his senior season with a foot injury.

Denison's season comes to a close with a 3-22 record and a 3-13 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  They entered the day tied with Oberlin College for the eighth and final spot in next week's NCAC Tournament but the Yeomen's victory over Hiram College this afternoon ended the Big Red's hopes of a playoff berth.
