In 2008, head men's lacrosse coach Matt McGinnis returns for his third year at the helm of the Big Red program. The last two seasons under McGinnis has netted 21 victories, two trips to the NCAA Tournament and one North Coast Athletic Conference championship.
The 2007 season saw the Big Red outscore their opponents 188-92 and post a 11-4 record before falling in their 15th NCAA Tournament. The 2007 Big Red featured 11 All-NCAC honorees and rookie attack Brady Burton was named the conference Newcomer of the Year after scoring 47 goals, the second-most by a DU player in a single season.
In the 2006 NCAA Tournament Denison topped rival Ohio Wesleyan, 10-9, in overtime to advance to the second round of the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2001. In the second round the Big Red suffered a 13-5 loss to eventual finalist and perennial power Salisbury, ending McGinnis' first season with an impressive 10-6 record.
In August of 2005, McGinnis became just the sixth head coach in the 50-year history of Denison men's lacrosse and in the 2006 season opener McGinnis became just the third DU head coach to roam the sideline in the past 40 years. Tommy Thomsen took over the head coaching duties at Denison in 1966 and completes his 25-year career with 260 victories and a .735 winning percentage. Mike Caravana took over for Thomsen in 1991 and would post a .690 winning percentage over 15 seasons, leading DU to eight NCAA tournament berths and two final four appearances in 1999 and 2001.
McGinnis served one season as an assistant coach under Caravana during the 2005 season before being offered the head coaching job prior to last season.
Before McGinnis' arrival at Denison, he helped lead Gettysburg to a 14-4 record and a top-five national ranking in 2004. From 2002 through 2003 he served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Salisbury University in Maryland.
In 2003 McGinnis earned a national championship ring as an assistant coach at Salisbury, where he worked primarily with the Sea Gulls' offense and the man-up teams.
After graduating from Salisbury in 1997 with a degree in physical education, McGinnis began a career as a high school teacher. He also holds a master's degree in counseling from Wilmington College in Delaware.
