Denison University Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Larry Scheiderer announced on August 12 the hiring of Mike Clark as the college's head baseball coach.
Clark comes to Denison after spending six seasons as an assistant coach at Emory University, where he served under Mike Twardoski, one of the winningest active coaches in NCAA Division III. During his time with the Eagles they posted a record of 162-54-1 (.749) while making three NCAA regional appearances to go along with four University Athletic Association championships. In 2007, Emory finished as the national runner-up at the Division III College World Series and set a new school record for victories with 43.
"Coming to Denison is an exciting opportunity," said Clark. "The doors have been opened, and I am thrilled to be given the chance to coach a great group of young men at an institution as highly regarded as Denison."
Clark sees the similarities among the students at Denison and Emory, and believes that will make the move a seamless one.
"The student-athletes we recruited at Emory had very high academic qualifications, and I'm certain that will make my transition to recruiting at Denison, another highly selective university, go smoothly," said Clark. "I am looking forward to working with Denison students, the coaching staff and the entire community, and I am thankful for this wonderful opportunity."
About Clark, Scheiderer said, "We are excited to have Mike joining our staff and guiding our baseball program. His experience and expertise, along with his leadership and enthusiasm, will serve the program and the university well."
Clark's duties at Emory included working with pitchers, catchers, hitters, outfielders and coaching at first base. Since 2007, he has coordinated all recruiting efforts for the Eagles, as well as serving as the equipment coordinator for Emory's 16-sport athletic department.
A 2002 graduate of Cortland State, Clark was a catcher on two-straight NCAA qualifying teams from 1997-98. In each of those seasons the Red Dragons posted back-to-back third-place finishes at the Division III College World Series. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at Cortland, Clark spent five years as a teacher and baseball coach at the high school, college, and summer-league levels in the greater Atlanta area.
In 2002, Clark was the head coach of the Finger Lakes White Sox, a collegiate summer league team based in central New York. That would lead to an assistant coaching position with the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod League in 2006. Clark helped coach the Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League playoffs and coached 10 future professional players, as well as five CCL All-Stars.
