Jon Berg looks for a hole against The College of Wooster on Saturday night.

Wooster quarterback Austin Holter scored on a 67 yard run and found Cameron Daniels on a 2-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to lead the Fighting Scots to a come from behind, 21-10 victory over Denison in front of a standing room only crowd at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

The capacity crowd, who dressed almost entirely in white in support of the Big Red as a part of Denison's first annual "Big Red Weekend", had plenty to cheer about early on as Denison took a 10-7 lead into the locker room.

With Denison trailing 7-3 with just over two minutes to play in the half, junior safety Caleb McFerren (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) stopped Jon Mathis on a fourth down rush and the Big Red took over with 2:02 to play on their own 22-yard line.

A pass interference call on the Fighting Scots followed by a 31-yard pass play from DU quarterback Mike Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) to senior wide receiver Nick Thompson (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) got Denison to to the Wooster 27-yard line as time continued to tick away.  Following two short gains and a sack by Wooster's Eric Keyes, Barnes would find sophomore Jeff Cochran (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) from 20 yards out to take the halftime lead.  The touchdown was the first allowed by the Wooster defense in 2008.  They entered the game having allowed only eight points through two games this season.

The third quarter would belong to the Scots thanks to the versatility of Holter.  After a three and out on their first possession, Holter would get a host of blocks from his teammates as he zigged and zagged his way to the end zone on a dazzling 67-yard touchdown run which gave Wooster a 14-10 lead.

With just over three minutes to go in the quarter and Wooster threatening once again, Denison cornerback Nick Weiss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) intercepted Holter in the back of the end zone for a touchback, giving the Big Red new life and the ball on the 20-yard line.  One first down is all the Big Red could muster on the ensuing possession and after a poor bounce on the Denison punt attempt gave Wooster the ball at the DU 44-yard line, the Scot offense went back to work.

As big as Holter's 67-yard scamper was earlier in the quarter, Dajuan Bush delivered the biggest play of the night when he broke loose for a 28-yard gain on 3rd and 1 from the Denison 35.

A pass interference call on the Big Red would land the Fighting Scots on the 2-yard line where Holter took a naked bootleg to his right and found his tight end, Daniels, for the final touchdown of the game.

In the fourth quarter Denison had the ball in Wooster territory three times but were turned away on each occasion, with the clincher coming via a Brian Swan interception in the end zone with 2:56 to play in the game.

Barnes attempted a career-high 44 passes and completed 22 for 238 yards and one touchdown.  He was intercepted once and was sacked three times.  He entered the game as the NCAC's rushing leader averaging 159.5 yards per game.  The stingy Scots defense held the speedy signal caller in check all night as he gained 19 yards on 11 carries.

Senior tailback Jon Berg (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led Denison in rushing with 64 yards off 15 carries.  Cochran, posted a career-best six catches for 52 yards and Thompson led all DU receivers with 69 yards off four receptions.

Wooster was led in rushing by Holter who carried the ball 12 times for 106 yards.  He also was 13-for-26 in the passing department for 195 yards and one touchdown.  His favorite target was junior tight end Mike Francescangeli who caught for passes for 111 yards.

Wooster's Matt DeGrand led all defensive players with 14 tackles.  Denison's Joe Ulrey (Marengo, Ohio/Highland) posted 11 tackles and Drew Homyk (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) chipped in 10 tackles and two pass break-up's.

The victory means that The College of Wooster retains the "Old Red Lantern".  The trophy, which is awarded annually to the winner of the Denison-Wooster football game, was instituted in 1989 to commemorate 100 years of football by the two institutions.  The lantern signifies the train ride that was taken by the two schools in the early 20th century.

The victory improves Wooster's record to 3-0 and 2-0 in the NCAC while Denison falls to 1-2 and 0-2 in conference play.  The Big Red will hit the road next Saturday when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for a 1 p.m. kickoff with Case Western Reserve University.
