Football: Eight named to National Football Foundation Honor Society

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame has announced the members of the 2009 Hampshire Honor Society. Among the selected recipients are eight members of the Big Red's graduating class of 2009. The eight selections for the University are the second most of any school, putting the Big Red in the company of Cornell, Ohio State, Augustana (S.D) and St. Francis (Ill.). Only the University of Dayton landed more members on the list, with 12.

Quarterback Mike Barnes, running back Jon Berg, wide receiver Nick Thompson, defensive end Tim Dukovich, tackle Will Minor, linebacker Jim Minor, safety Bert Bathiany and cornerback Mike Trzaska were each selected to the 2009 list of honors.

To be considered for membership in the honor society, student-athletes must have been a starter or significant for their team, achieve a 3.2 cumulative GPA throughout the duration of their undergraduate study and meet all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.

Founded in 1947 by General Douglas MacArthur, legendary Army coach Earl "Red" Blaik and journalist Grantland Rice, The Naitonal Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame is a non-profit educational organization designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in young people.
