Denison Places 29th in Division III Directors' Cup Standings

The final standings in the annual U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup are in and Denison University has turned in their fourth consecutive top-30 showing in the yearly list that highlights the top collegiate athletics programs in the country. Denison placed 29th overall with 427 points and was the top-ranked Division III institution in the state of Ohio and the top-ranked school out of the 10 North Coast Athletic Conference universities. Since the inception of the Directors' Cup in 1995-96 Denison has logged eight top-30 finishes, placing as high as 15th in 1998-99 and never worse than 45th out of more than 400 NCAA Division III colleges and universities.
Points are earned in the Directors' Cup by advancing to national postseason competition. In 2006-07 Denison saw seven varsity teams represented in NCAA Championships. The Big Red men's swimming and diving team led the way at the NCAA Division III national championships, earning 90 points. The women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and earned 73 points while the women's swimming and diving squad turned in fifth place showing at nationals to rack up 75 points. In the winter the women's basketball team advanced to the second round for the second time out of the last three seasons and the men's soccer team also moved on to the second round. Both programs totaled 50 points toward the DU cause. After an appearance in the elite 8 in 2005, the Denison women's soccer program continued to show their strength on the national stage by winning the regional championship and advancing to the round of 16. The men's lacrosse team rounded out postseason competition with their 15th NCAA tournament berth in program history.
Williams College (Mass.) defended its title in NCAA Division III competition by winning its 11th Directors' Cup in the last 12 years after earning 1137.5 points, 73 points ahead of runner-up Middlebury College (Vt.). Rounding out the top five were Cortland State (N.Y.), in third place with 892.75 points; Amherst College (Mass.), in fourth with 887.25 points; and Washington University (Mo.), in fifth place with 845 points.
