Men's Golf: Denison sits fifth after opeing day of NCAC Invitational

After the opening 36 holes of the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference Invitational hosted by Allegheny College, the Denison men's golf team ranks fifth with a score of 642. This is the final event in the 2008-09 NCAC Golf Championship Series.
Leading the Big Red through the first two rounds of play was sophomore Kyle Bates (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) who carded a 13-over par 157 (77-80) which ranks him 14th in the 45-man field. Junior Chase Foy (Westerville, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and senior Kenny Smaga (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Walsh Jesuit) each fired a 161 to finish tied for 20 while senior Tom Dunlap (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) rounded out the DU scoring with a 163.
Ohio Wesleyan's Jeff Nieman leads the field with a one-over par 145 through 36 holes. The Battling Bishops currently hold an eight stroke advantage of second-place Wittenberg University.
Heading into the final round of the championship series the Big Red sit fourth with 2,506 strokes. OWU leads the nine-team field with 2,358 total strokes. Wittenberg (2,441) is currently in second and Allegheny (2,456) sits in third place.
Denison and the rest of the field will close out the final 18 holes of the NCAC Golf Championship Series on Sunday at the Country Club in Meadville, Pa.
