Men's Golf: DU finishes fifth at NCAC Invitational

The Denison men's golf team finished fourth in the 2008-09 North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series after a fifth-place finish at the NCAC Invitational hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club in Meadville, Pa. on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red fired a 967 for the 54-hole event.

Kenny Smaga (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Walsh Jesuit) and Tom Dunlap (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) carded matching 80 to pace DU on Sunday. Smaga finished the tournament tied for 20th while Dunlap finished 24th. Following a 77 and 80 performance on the opening day of the event, Kyle Bates (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) shot an 82 to close out the match tied for 18th in the 45-person field. Rounding out the Denison scoring for day two was Rob Colmery (Nellysford, Va./St. Anne's Belfield School) who turned in an 83.

Ohio Wesleyan captured the team title with 898 total strokes. Wittenberg finished second with 918 strokes edging Allegheny by three shots. The Battling Bishops' Jeff Nieman took home medalist honors after firing a two-over par 218.

For the NCAC championship series, the Big Red tallied 2,831 shots en route to a fourth-place finish. OWU also won the championship series crown with 2,650 total strokes. The Tigers (2,745) finished second while the Gators (2,758) took third place.

Both Bates and Dunlap earned second team all-conference honors following their performances in the four-event golf championship series.
