Men's Golf: Denison places fifth at Hiram Invitational

The Big Red men's golf team trimmed 14 strokes off their day one total, and behind Connor Monaghan's (Garden City, N.Y./The Peddie School) 76, DU placed fifth at the Hiram Invitational from Hawks Nest Golf Course in Creston, Ohio.  The invitational was the second of four North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series events to be held during the 2009-10 academic year.

On Sunday, Monaghan's round of 76 would land him in a tie for ninth place in the overall standings.  Also firing a strong round on day two was first-year Sam Kaiser (Zionsville, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) who carded a 5-over-par 77 to tie for 17th.  Another freshman, Jeff Maier (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury), took third for the Big Red with rounds of 85 and 82.  Sophomore Rob Colmery (Nellysford, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) rebounded from his 87 in the opening round with an 81 on Sunday.

DU placed fifth as a team with 646 strokes.  The team victory went to Wittenberg University who totaled 600 strokes.  Ohio Wesleyan was second at 610, followed by Allegheny (615) and Wooster (632).  Individual medalist honors would be decided in a playoff won by OWU's Peter Joyce over Wittenberg's Craig Osterbrock.  Both golfers shot two-day total of 147.
