Denison University Director of Physical Education and Recreation Larry Scheiderer has announced the hiring of David Muchnick as the new head men's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach. Muchnick replaces Kyle Pottkotter who spent five years leading the men's golf program in addition to assisting with the Big Red basketball program.
"I am extremely excited to be a part of the Big Red family," said Muchnick. "With an exceptional liberal arts curriculum and a highly successful athletics program, this is an ideal place for a Division III student-athlete. With golf and basketball seasons rapidly approaching I look forward to working with both teams to help build on their past successes and achieve new heights."
While serving as the top assistant on the basketball court, Muchnick will be joined on the golf course by returning assistant men's golf coach and Director of Golf at Granville Golf Course, Rodney Butt. Butt has been a Class "A" member of the PGA of America since 1987 and has handled the on-course instruction and coaching for the Denison men's golf program since 2001.
Muchnick comes to Denison from Cortland State where he has served as the assistant men's basketball coach with the highly successful Red Dragon program since 2005. Cortland posted a 55-29 record in three seasons with Muchnick on board. That was highlighted by a 2006 State University of New York Athletic Conference regular season championship and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. In addition to his basketball coaching duties at Cortland, Muchnick also served as the assistant women's tennis coach for one season, was an activity class instructor through the department of physical education, and was the co-chair of the Multicultural and Diversity Council at Cortland.
A 2005 graduate of SUNY-Geneseo, Muchnick was a four-year member of the men's basketball team. Muchnick and the Knights posted three SUNYAC conference tournament appearances during his stay at Geneseo. As a senior he was awarded the James E. Divico Memorial Award, given to a senior male athlete by the Geneseo athletic department for exemplary character, leadership, and commitment on and off the court.
Muchnick holds a bachelor of arts in communication from Geneseo and a master of science in sport management from Cortland. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY). A native of Oceanside, N.Y., Muchnick is residing in nearby Pataskala.
