Men's Golf: Denison places third in overall NCAC standings

The Denison Big Red closed out four-event series of North Coast Athletic Conference events with a fourth place finish at the NCAC Championship at Granville Golf Course.  Denison finished with a 54-hole total of 940, finishing behind Wittenberg (938), Allegheny (922) and Ohio Wesleyan (887). 

The three-round total landed Denison in third place in the overall conference standings with 2,796 strokes.  Ohio Wesleyan University ran away with the championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Led by season medalist Jeff Nieman, the Bishops totaled 2,669 strokes in nine rounds for an average of 296.5.

Denison's Kyle Bates (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) made a strong push for the weekend medalist honor following his even-par 71 in round two and a three-over 74 in the final round.  Bates earned first-team All-NCAC honors for his third place finish overall and nine-round average of 75.8.

Senior Ryan Brady (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) earned second team All-NCAC and posted the eighth best finish among all conference golfers to play in all nine events.  Over the course of those rounds he totaled 702 strokes for a 78.0 average.  This weekend Brady placed third on the team with a 234 (80, 81, 78).

Denison's second-best performance came from Tom Dunlap (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) who carded rounds of 80, 80 and 77 to close out the season.  Denison's total of 237 placed him in a tie for 15th.

Junior Kenny Smaga (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) posted a total of 242 (79, 82, 81) and Frank Steinberg (Flemington, N.J./Rutgers Prep) shot a 246 (81, 82, 83).
