Men's Indoor Track & Field: 4x800 relay breaks 41-year old school record at DU Last Chance Meet

Ben Pendery was a member of the 4x800 relay team that broke a 41-year old school record at the Denison Last Chance Meet on Friday night.
The Denison relay team of Ben Holder (Dover, Ohio/Dover), Lex Hultquist (Bethesda, Md./Webb School of Knoxville), Ben Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) and Chris Black (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won the 4x800 event and broke a 41-year old school record to help lead the Big Red at the Denison Last Chance Meet on Friday. The foursome finished the event with a time of 7:53.49 which shattered the previous record of 7:58.64 set back in 1968.
Also aiding the DU cause was senior Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield). Barnes won the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.44. Also logging a victory for the Big Red was the 4x400 relay team of first-year Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North), Pendery, Black and Barnes who finished their event at 3:29.93.
Senior Grant Russo (Media, Ohio/Medina) and freshman Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) both turned in excellent performances in their respective events. Russo finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a mark of 8:56.10 while Salukombo logged a time of 4:18.72 in the one mile, which was good enough for fourth place. Additionally, Salukombo's time in the mile ranked fourth best in Denison history.
Senior Steve Flatley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) notched a pair of third-place finishes in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter. Flatley crossed the line at 6.71 in the 55 and registered a time of 23.69 in the 200. Flatley was trailed in the 200 by rookie Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee), who came in fifth with a mark of 23.92.
In the field events, first-year Muhammad Maken (Sargodha, Pakistan/Aitchison) finished runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 20-02.50 while senior Robbie Christian (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-10.50.
DU returns to action next weekend when the host the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
