Men's Indoor Track & Field: Big Red finish third at Kenyon Classic

Dee Salukombo notched wins in the one mile and 3,000-meter run at the Kenyon Classic on Saturday.

Freshman Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) recorded a pair of victories to help the Denison Big Red to a third-place finish at the Kenyon College Classic on Saturday in Gambier, Ohio. The Big Red finished the meet with 96 points.

Salukombo was victorious in both the one mile and 3,000-meter run. The first-year logged a time of 4:28.61 in the mile and finished the 3,000 meter with a mark of 8:54.48.

Also recording wins were senior Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) and freshman Chris Black (Chatham, N.J./Chatham). Barnes took home the 400-meter dash crown with a time of 51.26. Freshman Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) finished runner-up to Barnes in the event with a time of 53.30 while sophomore Brett Ayers (Mentor, Ohio.Mentor) took fourth at 53.68.

Black and sophomore Todd Johnson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) claimed the top two spots in the 800-meter run. Black logged a time of 1:58.68 while Johnson finished the event in 2:03.02.

In the 55-meter dash, senior Steve Flatley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) took second with a mark of 6.69 while rookie Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./Univ. School of Milwaukee) was fifth at 6.94.

Senior Robbie Christian (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recorded a fourth-place finish in the high jump after clearing 1.80m.

The 4x400 relay team won their event with a time of 3:32.07 while the 4x200 relay squad finished third with a time of 1:35.86.

DU returns to action on Friday (Feb. 27) when they host the Denison Last Change Meet at 5:30 p.m.
