Big Red Invitational - Men's Results
Date: February 3, 2007
Location: GRANVILLE
The Denison men's indoor track and field squad continued their impressive showings in the middle distance and distance races on Saturday at the unscored, five-team Big Red Invitational at the Mitchell Center.
In the 800 meters DU runners occupied five of the top-seven places in the race. Sophomore Lex Hultquist (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) won the event with a time of 1:56.35 which is the fastest time in the 800 by a DU runner since Tyler Walker logged a time of 1:56.14 in 2004. According to the Denison record books Hultquist's 800 time ranks him fourth all-time.
Following Hultquist in second place was sophomore Ben Holder (Dover, Ohio/Dover) who crossed the finish line in 1:59.68. Right on his heels was teammate Ben Pendery (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) who took third in 1:59.84. Joel Bendtsen (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and Matt Perkett (Newburgh, Ind./Indiana Academy) rounded out the top Big Red finishers in the event with fifth and seventh place finishes, respectively.
The DU 4x400 relay team comprised of Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield), Hultquist, Pendery and Erik Walker (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) won the event by more than two seconds with a time of 3:30.64. Two events prior, Barnes logged a second place finish in the 200 meter finals with a time of 22.98, falling to Dondrea Brown of Kenyon by just eight one-hundredths of a second. Barnes' time was the third fastest documented time in DU history in the 200 meters.
In the mile Adam Tewahade (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) was the runner-up with a time of 4:34.70 and Jon Gober (Pierre, S.D./TF Riggs) placed seventh in 4:49.73. Brandon McAdams (Columbus, Ohio/Pendelton School) and Derek Fry (Butler, Ohio/Clear Fork) qualified for the finals of the 55 meter dash and placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the field events Steven Weber (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto), Andrew Cook (Thetford Center, Vt./Thetford Academy) and Bill Horn (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) all turned in fourth place finishes in their respective events. Weber threw a distance of 41'8" in the shot put and Cook cleared 6'0" in the high jump. In the pole vault, first-year, Horn cleared 12'6", finishing behind three vaulters from Rose-Hulman. Jay Cosby (Centerville, Ohio/Miami Valley) rounded out the top field event performers with a fifth place finish and a distance of 39'9.5" in the triple jump.
(Note regarding the Denison "mile" record from head coach Pan Fanaritis)
Prior to this year's Lid-Lifter event the only documented mile times in our files were from the 2006 season. When Lex Hultquist ran his time of 4:22.49 we suspected there were faster times, especially from the 1960's and 1970's but we had no proof. Therefore we explained that Hultquist's time was the "modern" record.
Since then, alum Joe Bolster has informed us of two definite and one possibly faster time; a 4:15.14 run by Alexander in 1973 and 4:17.54 by Bates in 1975. The time in question is a 4:20.00 by Campbell in 1965.
This week we have posted a link on the men's and women's indoor track and field pages featuring the top-5 male and female performances, on record. Due to lack of information, the running events, except for the mile, will all be metric. There are some documented converted marks available.
Documented updates to the lists are welcome. Please email Coach Fanaritis at fanaritis@denison.edu. In the spring the same lists will be posted for outdoor track and field.
