Michael Barnes is Denison's third ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection this season. He will return for his senior year in 2008-09 to defend his conference championships in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

Junior sprinter Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second-team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday (June 23).

Barnes, a first-team Academic All-District IV selection, is the third Academic All-American for Denison University in the 2007-08 academic year.  Overall, Barnes is the 53rd Denison student-athlete to achieve this prestigious honor from CoSIDA.  The highly-competitive field of All-District award winners spanned the elite from NCAA Division II, Division III and the NAIA.  A complete list of the 2008-09 Academic All-Americans for cross country/track and field can be found at the "more information" link above.

Barnes was named the 2008 NCAC Men's Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year for indoor track after capturing conference titles in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.  Barnes ran a time of 22.65 to win the 200 and followed that with the conference's fastest winning time since 2003 (50.24) in the 400.  The victories were Barnes' second and third conference titles of his career.

Aside from his accolades on the track, Barnes is also the starting quarterback of the Denison football team and is a part of the Denison Student Athlete Advisory Council.  He holds a 3.84 grade point average as an economics major.
