Nick Jacobs and the Big Red will travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday for the 2009 NCAA Division III Quarterfinals.

For the first time since 2001 and the 11th time in school history, Denison University has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III men's lacrosse championship following their 14-7 victory over No. 3 Roanoke on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Va.

Denison will travel to No. 5 Gettysburg on Wednesday (May 11) at 2 p.m. for a rematch of last year's second round match against the Bullets.  Gettysburg and Denison will be playing for the 17th time and for the fourth time in the NCAA Tournament.  Last year the Bullets held off the Big Red for a 9-8 overtime victory to advance to the Elite 8. Two of the previous three NCAA Tournament games involving Denison and Gettysburg have gone to overtime. In fact, the 11-10 win by the Bullets in 1994 in triple-overtime is the longest game in NCAA Tournament history.

The winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal will advance to the semifinals on Saturday and face the winner of Stevenson/Salisbury quarterfinal.  Denison has made two NCAA semifinals in school history, with the first coming in 1999 and the second following in 2001.

On Saturday at Roanoke, Denison scored the first four goals of the game and led by as many as eight goals in the third quarter.  Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) scored five goals and added one assist while freshman goalie Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) posted 14 saves in the cage.  Roanoke entered the game with a 17-1 record and boasted the nation's top scoring offense at nearly 20 goals per game.  Their seven goal output was Roanoke's lowest since a 28-4 loss to Salisbury in 2007, a span of 49 games.

With 14 victories this season Denison is just one win shy of matching the school record for victories set in 1982.  That squad, coached by Denison's all-time leader in wins, Tommy Thomsen, went 15-3 and achieved Denison's first NCAA Tournament berth.

Gettysburg advanced to the quarterfinals after a 15-10 victory over No. 6 Washington & Lee.  The Bullets have won 12 straight games and are riding a 14-game home winning streak that dates back to last season.  Junior Josh Reichart scored five goals against W&L off just five shot attempts.  Senior goalie Zach Furshman has posted a 6.99 goals against average and a .548 save percentage.  This is Gettysburg's 19th NCAA appearance and their sixth straight trip to the round of eight.
