Emmett Jones (#25) and Nate Hall (#2) accounted for 9 goals and 4 assists in Denison's 17-9 victory over Ohio Wesleyan.

Thanks to a 10-goal scoring outburst in the first quarter the Denison Big Red handed Ohio Wesleyan a 17-9 defeat on Sunday afternoon from Selby Field in Delaware, Ohio.

Denison, who entered the contest ranked 16th in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll, quieted the home crowd by jumping out to a nine-goal lead after just 15 minutes of play. Freshman Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) got things started for the Big Red with an unassisted goal just 1:07 into the game.  Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) would follow with the first of his game-high five goals at the 11:18 mark.  On the goal Ohio Wesleyan's Lee Catt was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty and Denison capitalized quickly when Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) scored just 13 seconds later off an assist by senior attack Nate Hall (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington).

OWU would respond with their first goal with 10:30 to play in the opening quarter but Hall's unassisted goal with 8:43 left would spark a 7-0 run that would last until the opening minute of the second quarter.  Denison outshot the Bishops 17-2 in the pivotal first quarter while winning 7-of-12 face-off's.

Over the next 45 minutes of play OWU edged the Big Red on the scoreboard 8-7 but that wouldn't be enough to overcome the early deficit.

Jones led all scorers with five goals but Hall was the overall points leader thanks to his four goals and four assists.  Burton also finished with four goals while Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) added one goal and three assists.

DU attempted 45 shots as both Burton and Jones reached double-digit with 10 shot attempts, apeice.  The Big Red secured 21 ground balls as Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Ted Gulyas (Medina, Ohio/Medina) each posted four to lead Denison.

Freshman goalie Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) continued his strong play in the cage by posting seven saves in 60 minutes.  OWU goalie Jud Hall also finished with nine saves in 56 minutes.

There were a total of 19 penalties called in the game and Denison finished 3-for-10 in extra-man situtations.  The Bishops were just 1-for-7 in EMO.

The victory marked the first win for the Big Red in Delaware since April 15, 2000 breaking The Bishops' six-game home winning streak against Denison.  Not only did DU snap their skid at Selby Field, they can now boast to have won five out of the last six meetings between the two rivals.  Sunday's game was the 87th contest between the two schools and Denison leads that series 44-42-1.

The win improves Denison's record to 6-1 overall and moves them to 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  Ohio Wesleyan falls to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  The Big Red will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Oberlin College for a 6:30 p.m. clash with the Yeomen.
