Dan Maude scored 3 times and netted career goal No. 100 on Saturday against Stevenson.
Fourth-ranked Stevenson took a 7-2 lead into halftime and despite a valiant effort from the Big Red in the second half, the Mustangs managed to hang on for a 12-9 win, snapping Denison's 11-game winning streak.
Stevenson started out very strong, scoring the game's first three goals in the opening 12 minutes of play. Senior middie Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./Haverford) woke up the Denison sideline with an unassisted goal 43 seconds before the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs would counter that score by forcing a DU turnover and taking a 4-1 lead off a Richie Ford unassisted goal.
With 13 minutes left in the half, Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) scored his first of what would be four goals to trim the lead to 4-2 but a three-goal run by the Mustangs would give them a five-goal cushion heading into the intermission.
Early in the third quarter Denison sent a message that they would not go quietly when Maude fired a rocket to the upper left corner of the goal for his second score of the game. After a goal by Stevenson's Greg Furshman with 2:41 to play, the Big Red won the ensuing face-off but quickly turned the ball over. Before Stevenson could get into transition, Maude stepped in front of a pass at midfield for an interception and found a streaking Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) who dashed down the right side of the field and led a diving Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) perfectly for a highlight-reel worthy goal that cut the lead to 9-5.
With 12:57 to play in the game Maude scored for the third time in the game, giving him 100 goals for his career. The senior All-American is the fifth Denison player since 1991 to score 100 career goals at Denison. His teammate, Burton, accomplished this feat earlier in the season against Trine and now has 140 career goals.
Now trailing just 9-7 Stevenson countered with their biggest goal of the day, a shorthanded goal by Ford from Chris Baldwin to give their squad a three-goal lead with just over 12 minutes to play. Burton would tack on two more extra-man goals in the quarter but those scores would be matched by the Mustangs, setting the final at 12-9.
Denison and Stevenson both took 37 shots and the Big Red finished with 30 ground balls to 23 for the Mustangs. The two squads were also dead-even in face-off's with each winning 12 apiece. Stevenson goalie Geoff Hebert recorded 12 saves while Denison's Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finished with 10 saves.
Burton led Denison with four goals off eight shots while Maude followed with three goals and one assist off eight shot attempts. Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the way with six ground balls and was 9 for 16 on face-off duty. Stevenson's Steve Kasimer led his squad in points with three goals and three assists. Jimmy Dailey added two goals and two assists.
The Big Red's regular season comes to an end with a 12-2 record. They entered the game ranked 11th in the latest Division III Top-20 poll and were sixth in the most recent NCAA regional rankings. They will now wait till Sunday night to learn their fate from the NCAA selection committee. The tournament draw will be announced between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on CBS College Sports Television's exclusive men's and women's lacrosse selection show.
