Emmett Jones tied his career high with 6 goals against St. Vincent.
Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) scored six times and 13 players in all got their name in the scoring column as the 11th ranked Denison Big Red rolled to a 24-6 victory over St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. The win improves Denison's record to 12-1 and extends their winning streak to 11-games, tying last year's mark and just one win shy of the Denison record for consecutive wins set in 1982.
Denison took a 5-3 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of goals by Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) and Jones as well as an unassisted score by senior Ted Gulyas (Medina, Ohio/Medina). In the second quarter the Big Red put the game away by outscoring the Bearcats 7-2. In the second half the rout would continue as DU put 12 more goals on the board while holding St. Vincent to just one goal, early in the third quarter.
While Jones was the offensive star, tying his career-high with six goals. He also added one assist on the night. Smith and Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents') each scored three goals. Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) posted two goals while leading the team in assists with three. Junior attack Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) also posted two goals.
DU took 58 shots on the night and were dominate in face-off's taking 25-of-34. Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) was 10-for-10 and Jake Vita (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) was 13-for-18. He also scored the first goal of his career in the second quarter.
Freshman goalie Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) played 47 minutes in the cage and posted three saves and three ground balls. Junior Pat Cuff (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) led the team with five saves in just over nine minutes of action.
Denison will try and tie the school record for consecutive wins on Saturday (May 2) when fourth-ranked Stevenson University comes to Granville for what will be a clash between two of the nation's top teams. Stevenson is 14-1, recently suffering their first loss of the season to No. 5 Salisbury in the CAC Championship game. This will be the second meeting all-time between Denison and Stevenson. Denison prevailed 12-5 in 2002 when the school was still referred to as Villa Julie. The Denison-Stevenson game will be broadcast via live audio through the Denison Sports Network beginning at 1 p.m.
