Date: March 8, 2008
Location: GETTYSBURG, Pa.

Second-ranked Gettysburg College outscored Denison 4-2 in the second half behind three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter resulting in a 9-5 loss for the Big Red men's lacrosse team in Gettysburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

Both team's entered the contest with identical 2-0 records but the Bullets were forced to comeback after Denison took a 2-1 lead behind goals by Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) and Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./Haverford School).

The second quarter would belong to Gettysburg and four consecutive goals by Trip Dyer, Drew Duckworth, Joe Brody and Tom O'Donnell.

The Bullets held a 5-3 lead at the half but thanks to six third quarter saves by Big Red senior goalie Alex Baruch (Richmond, Va./St. Chirstopher's), the lead remained at just two heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter opened well for Denison as Burton found the back of the cage for the second time off an assist by Topher Nazaruk (Stratford, Conn./Fairfield Prep) cutting the Gettysburg lead to 6-5 with 12:11 to play.  Over the next three and a half minutes Gettysburg would attempt five shots, with two resulting in Baruch saves.  However, the Bullets broke through with 8:26 to play when Ben Sufrin netted his first goal to put Gettysburg up two.  Brody and Duckworth would round out the scoring with 5:51 and 4:26 to play, respectively.

Baruch ended the game with 14 saves after facing 38 shots.  Denison attempted 31 shots and forced Gettysburg goalies Charles Floeckher and Zachar Furshman into 12 combined saves.

Maude and Burton both finished with two goals while Nazaruk posted one goal and one assist.  Sophomore Connor Detjen (Winnteka, Ill./Loyola Academy) was 7-for-12 in face-off situations and led DU with six ground balls.  As a team Denison committed three penalties which resulted in one extra-man goal for Gettysburg in the first quarter.  The Bullets were penalized four times and DU was 0-4 in man-up opportunities.

Denison will continue play over their spring break with a game on Wednesday (March 12) at 1 p.m. in Collegeville, Pa. against Ursinus College.  Their road trip will wrap up next Sunday (March 16) in a clash with top-ranked Salisbury at 12 p.m.

Notable: With today's victory Gettysburg head coach Hank Janczyk became just the third head coach in the history of college lacrosse to post 300 career victories.  Janczyk has coached Gettysburg for the last 21 seasons.  Current Denison head coach Matt McGinnis served as an assistant coach under Janczyk during the 2004 season.
