Men's Outdoor Track & Field: DU posts strong showing at Big Red Invitational

Steve Gallego won the javelin with a toss of 168-08 at Friday's Big Red Invitational in Granville.
On a day that legendary head men's tack coach Bob Shannon was honored by the Denison community, the Big Red posted a strong showing at the Big Red Invitational in Granville on Friday. DU recorded five victories on the day and posted 11 top three finishes.
Seniors Grant Russo (Media, Ohio/Medina) and Ben Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands), and junior Adam Tewahade (Aurora, Colo./Regis) all notched first-place finishes in long distance events for Denison. Russo won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:49.42 while Tewahade crossed the finish line at 4:06.03 in the 1,500 meters and Pendery was tied for first in the 800 with a mark of 1:56.57.
Senior Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 (22.58) and 400 (50.76) while Steve Flatley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.31. The 4x200 relay team of Barnes, Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North), Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) and Flatley finished runner up with a time of 43.92.
The Big Red also has significant success in the field events. Sophomore Steve Gallego (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan) and junior Bill Aukerman (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) finished first and second in the javelin with throws of 168-08 and 158-08, respectively. Senior Robbie Christian (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) tied for first in the high jump (6-00.00) while Aukerman captured a third-place finish (5-10.00).
During the meet events were stopped so the Big Red community could honor legendary coach Bob Shannon with a plaque that is located in the northeast corner of Deeds Field-Piper Stadium right by the main entrance.
DU return to action next Saturday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
