Men's Outdoor Track & Field: Denison placed fifth at NCAC Championship

The Denison men's outdoor track and field team closed out their 2009 season with a fifth place finish at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships which were hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

Sophomore Steve Gallego (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan) turned in one of Denison's top performances of the meet by placing first in the javelin.  Gallego fired off a career-best throw of 189'9" which won the event by more than 11 feet.  The throw was also an NCAA provisional qualifying distance.

Denison's other individual championship was captured by senior Skyler Mosenthal (Briarcliff, N.J./Briarcliff) who bested teammate Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.  Mosenthal took the gold medal with a time of 9:36.44.  Salukombo followed in 9:40.82 and would return in the men's 5,000 meters to place sixth in 15:29.86.

Senior Ben Holder (Dover, Ohio/Dover) logged a time of 1:58.42 in the 800 meters to finish fifth overall and classmate Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) placed fifth in the 200 meter dash in 22.59 seconds.  Earlier in the meet Barnes, the 2009 Indoor Sprinter of the Year, placed seventh in the 400 meter dash (49.97).

The 100 meter dash saw Steve Flatley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) finish sixth in 11.25 seconds.  Adam Tewahade (Aurora, Colo./Regis)  took fifth in the 1,500 meters and the 4x100 relay team of Barnes, Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/North), Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School) and Flatley landed in fourth after a time of 43.95.

Senior Robbie Christian (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) rounded out Denison's point-scorers on Saturday with an eighth place eight of 5'10.75" in the high jump.

Denison totaled 58 points to place fifth.  Ohio Wesleyan was the overall champion with 226 points.
