Men's Outdoor Track & Field: Denison takes fifth at W&J Invitational

Dee Salukombo won the 3,000 steeplechase at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday.

The Denison men's outdoor track & field squad recorded 58 points en route to finishing fifth of 13 teams at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) notched the Big Red's only victory of the day with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechsae. In addition to winning the event, Salukombo's time of 9:37.30 set a new meet record. Senior Steve Flatley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) took fifth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Flatley posted times of 11.46 and 23.38, respectively.

Senior Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) finished runner up in the 400-meter dash while teammate Brett Ayers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) logged an eighth-place finish. Barnes finished the race in a time of 51.39 while Ayers registered a time of 53.81. Seniors Ben Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) and Ben Holder (Dover, Ohio/Dover) finished fourth and fifth in the 800 with times of 1:59.21 and 1:59.38, respectively.

Junior Adam Tewahade (Aurora, Colo./Regis) was seventh in the 1500-meter run with a mark of 4:10.47. Senior Lex Hultquist (Bethesda, Md./Webb School of Knoxville) followed right behind Tewahade with an time of 4:12.06. In the 5,000-meter run, Alex Chappars (Xenia, Ohio/Bellbrook) took fifth while teammates Daniel Doggett (Byfield, Mass./The Governor's Academy) and Russell Holden (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) finished seventh and eighth. Chappars logged a time of 16:15.24, Doggett crossed the line in 16:30.72 and Holden finished the race in 16:33.53.

The 4x100 relay team of Banres, Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North), Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwauke) and Flatley finished second with a mark of 43.79 while the 4x400 foursome of Effinger, Ayesr, Pendery and Barnes took fifth with a mark of 3:33.88.

At the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by OWU, sophomore Steven Gallego (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan) and junior Bill Aukerman (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) logged a pair of top 15 finishes. Gallego was ninth in the javelin with a toss of 150-10 and 13th in the shot put with a heavy of 41-05.75. Aukerman notched a 10th-place finish in the high jump after clearing 5-10 and was 12th in the javelin with a distance of 146-02.

Denison returns to action on Saturday (April 11) when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University for the Division III All-Ohio Championships.
