The Denison University Men's outdoor track and field team sent a portion of their team to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for their annual four-team William Welch Invitational on Saturday. Denison turned in three first place finishes on the day thanks to victories by sophomore Jeff Mervosh (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) in the shot put, sophomore Clark Paciorek (Novi, Mich./Northville) in the steeplechase and Andrew Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) in the 1,500 meters. Mervosh winning throw traveled 42'2 ¾". For Paciorek, he won the 3000 meter steeplechase by cruising past the competition with a time of 9:42.08. Second place went to Wabash's Ethan Paul in 10:12.91. Schaefer crossed the finish in 4:09.27. Denison's trio of distance runners faired well in the 5000 meters, taking third, fourth and fifth place. Denison's best performance in the event went to Brian Gilson (Cordland, Ohio/J.F.K.) who crossed in 15:57.00. Adam Neizmik (Warren, Pa./Warren) was fourth and Paciorek was fifth. In the 800 meters, Happy Grewal (Parma, Ohio/Parma) came in third with a time of 2:01.50 and in the 100 meter dash, Paul Badger (Braintree, Mass./Thayer) competed in the finals and placed ninth in 12.00. The remaining field events saw James Hawkins and Mervosh placed fifth and seventh, respectively in the discus. Jamie Saul (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) came in sixth in the triple jump and Eric Gastevich (Chicago, Ill/Highland Park) tied for fourth in the high jump. Brett O'Brien (Rumson, Va./Christian Brothers) picked up three points with his sixth place showing in the javelin. Steve Bedosky was sixth in the hammer throw. Brandon Horton (Westport, Conn./Staples) placed fourth in the pole vault clearing 12'5 ½" and Chris Barber (Owensboro, Ky./Bath) turned in an eighth place finish in the shot put. Denison's next event will be next Saturday, April 2, at the Wooster Invitational.
