Men's Soccer: Big Red battle Albion to double overtime tie
Date: September 07, 2008
Location: GRANVILLE
After 110 minutes of action, the Denison Big Red battled to a 1-1 tie with Albion on the final day of the Denison Invitational at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
After a few early opportunities midway through the opening period, the Big Red broke the scoreless tie when freshman Preston Wagner (Toronto, Ontario/TASIS American School) dished the ball to sophomore Drew Lash (Ballwin, Mo./Whitfield School) for a goal in the 27th minute. Lash received the Wagner pass at the top of the box and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
DU carried the lead into the second half, but in the 51st minute the Britons' Clay Hewitt found the twine to knot the score at 1-1. Hewitt fired a shot past a diving Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) after Mark Feger booted the ball through the Big Red defense.
Albion had a few quality scoring chances midway through the period, but solid defense kept the score tied. Denison freshman Matt Kepler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) unloaded a shot with just under 15 minutes to play, but Briton goalkeeper Brian Greathouse made a diving save to rob Kepler of the tally. Neither team generated serious scoring threats in the defensive dominated overtime periods.
Albion outshot DU 15-12 with 13 of the Britons' shots coming after the first half. Donahue tallied four saves, while Jordan Thomas and Greathouse each stopped a shot for Albion.
Denison is now 2-1-1 on the season and will travel to Washington (Mo.) to battle Fontbonne on Friday (Sept. 12) at 6 p.m. In the early game DePauw and Olivet played to a 2-2 double overtime draw.
