Kevin Donahue picked up his 18th career shutout on Wednesday night against Kenyon.

The Big Red took advantage of a first half penalty kick and tacked on a second goal for some insurance with just under 20 minutes remaining, resulting in an impressive 2-0 victory over Kenyon College on Wednesday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The regionally ranked Lords entered the match fresh off a 4-1 upset over previous unbeaten, Wittenberg, on Saturday in Gambier and came out firing early, outshooting the Big Red 7-2 in the first half.  Despite controlling the offensive possession in the first half Denison cashed in on their first real scoring attempt when sophomore Len Mills was fouled by a Kenyon defender in the box in transition.  Denison was awarded a penalty kick that was converted by junior midfielder Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy).  The goal was Shorten's sixth of the season.  It was also his second penalty kick in as many chances.

Just 55 seconds into the second half it looked as if the Lords were going to tie the score when Aaron Manning got out on a fast break and was fouled by a Denison defender in the box, in a near perfect mimic of the play which led to Denison's goal in the first half.  Kenyon's Felix Hoffman was asked to take the penalty kick which he sent to low and to the right corner of the goal.  Denison junior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) anticipated the shot and barley got his finger tips on the ball, deflecting it to the right of the goal.

After the save by Donahue momentum swung back in Denison's favor and the Big Red's back line, fueled by the play of senior David Folt (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), would hold strong.  In the 71st minute DU got another run-out led by Mills and the Pittsburgh native slotted a perfect pass to a streaking Ben Peek (Burke, Va./Robinson Secondary) who sent the first touch past the Kenyon keeper.

Over the next 19:48 the Denison defense would hold strong and deliver their first shutout victory of the season.  The Lords held a 18-6 advantage in shots and kept Donahue busy between the pipes.  He would turn in a brilliant seven-save performance highlighted by a number of aggressive defensive plays which thwarted multiple Kenyon scoring chances.  He lowered his goals against average to 1.36 and increased his season save total to 66.

Denison did lead corner kicks 5-3 while committing 13 fouls to Kenyon's 12.

The Big Red's overall record improves to 5-6-3 and 2-3-1 in the NCAC.  They will look to continue their late-season surge on Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host No. 6 Wittenberg at 1 p.m.
