Men's Swimming & Diving: DU Men streak past Grove City

First-year Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) won three events and logged NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 100 and 200 backstrokes as the Denison Big Red cruised to a 162-120 win over Grove City College on Saturday in Western Pennsylvania.
Barry started off the day with John Nemeth (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), Chris Bagley and John Geissinger (Darien, Conn./Lawrenceville School) who would go on to win the 200 medley relay in 1:34.85. Barry returned in the 100 back with a time of 51.24 and later in the 200 back when he touched in 1:53.66. Another rookie, Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), was dominate in the 200 free when he notched victory and a "B" cut time of 1:42.47.
DU took the top three spots in the 1000 freestyle event that was led by Casey Browning's (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) time of 9:58.27. Sophomore Kyle Chabot (Washington, Mich./Stony Creek) took the 200 fly in 1:58.38 and also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.34. Senior David Curtis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) covered the 500 freestyle in 4:41.46 to win and Geissinger ended the day with a pair of strong second-place performances against some top-notch competition in the 50 and 100 freestyles. In the 50 free, Geissinger was edged by 2007 NCAA national champion Tim Whitbeck. Geissinger touched in 21.23 and Whitbeck covered the two lengths of the pool in 20.97 seconds. In the 100 free Geissinger and Grove City winner Caleb Courage both notched "B" cut times as Courage touched in 45.68 and Geissinger was right behind in 45.97.
In the one-meter dive Denison's Philip Meyer (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) took the top spot with a score of 249.95. Russ Bornschein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was second with a total of 227.45.
Denison will host Carnegie Mellon next Saturday at 1 p.m.
