Men's Swimming & Diving: Kenyon edges rival Denison

The Denison men's swimming & diving dropped a 123-114 meet to North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon College on Saturday in a classic meeting of Division III national powerhouses.

Freshman Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) and senior John Geissinger (Darien, Conn./The Lawrenceville School) each won a pair of events to pace the Big Red. Barry won the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:58.16 and followed that up with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 52.41. Gessinger captured first in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 46.89. The senior along with freshman Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich.), sophomore Andrew Krawchyk (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and freshman Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) won the 400-yard freestyle relay touching in at 3:09.46.

Sophomore Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) finished second to Barry in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:59.58 while Krawchyk was runner up in the Geissinger in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.36. Thurston touched in 1:44.95 to take second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Sophomore diver Cody Smith (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) had a breakthrough afternoon to lead the DU divers to a total of five national cut scores.  Smith won the one meter with a score of 286.30 and set a school record in the three meter with 298.00 points.  Following Smith in the three meter was first-year Phil Meyer (River Forest, Ill./Oak park and River Forest) who scored 276.80 which was a national qualifying score.  In the one meter both Meyer and senior Russ Bornschein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) surpassed their national cut scores.  Meyer was third with 271.20 points and Bornschein took second with 273.95 points.

The Big Red (2-1, 2-1 NCAC) return to action on Nov. 15 when they travel to Detroit, Mich. for a tri-meet against Wayne State and Calvin. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
