Men's Swimming & Diving: Big Red take the lead at Miami Invitational

After eight events, the Denison University men's swimming & diving team took the lead at the Miami (OH) Invitational. The Big Red has tallied 973 points and holds an 18.5 point lead over Oakland University.
Senior John Geissinger (Darien, Conn./The Lawrenceville School) led Denison with a victory in the 200 freestyle. Geissinger finished the event in a time of 1:38.92 which qualified him for the NCAA National Meet. Joining Geissinger in the championship flight was first-year Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and senior David Curtis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer). Thurston and Curtis finished sixth and eighth with time of 1:41.78 and 1:42.32, respectively.
Geissinger was also sixth in the 50 free touching the wall at 20.68 while senior Jon Behnke (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) finished ninth at 21.09.
Additionally, Thurston logged a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM touching the wall at 4:03.12. Freshman Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) took fourth with a time of 50.95 to lead a trio of DU swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Charles Grodecki (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Behnke finished eighth and ninth with marks of 53.28 and 53.52, respectively.
Sophomore Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) took 12th in the 100 breaststroke (58.92) while first-year Matt Mackowski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) was 15th with a mark of 1:00.01 and junior Andy Brabson (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) logged a 17th-place finish with a time of 1:00.32.
The 400 medley relay squad of Barry, Lewing, Curtis and Geissinger took fifth touching the wall at 3:25.63.
Denison closes out the Miami Invitational on Saturday. Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. with the finals taking place at 6 p.m.
