Men's Swimming & Diving: Denison Downs Oberlin and OWU

The Denison men's swimming
and diving team defeated Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday
afternoon to open up their 2007-08 dual meet slate.
Senior diver Stephen Julka (Madison, Wis./Memorial)
got his season off to a great start by reaching NCAA qualifying standards in
both the one and three meter dives.In
the 1 meter, Julka totaled 283.60 points to finish in front of teammates Russ
Bornschein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer)
and Cody Smith (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford). Julka returned in the 3 meter with a score of
275.70.
Against Oberlin, DU prevailed 120-83. Freshman Ben Terry (Evanston, Ill./Evanston
Twp.) took first place in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:13.31. John Geissinger (Darien, Conn./The
Lawrenceville School) won the 200 free in 1:45.01 and Jon Behnke (Orinda,
Calif./Miramonte) took 22.05 seconds to win the 50 free.
Freshman Andrew Krawchyk (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) notched his first career victory in the 200
IM with a time of 2:00.84. Senior Lowell
Byers (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) touched in 53.09 seconds to win the 100
fly and Geissinger and Behnke would round out the Denison scoring with wins in the 100 free and
100 backstroke, respectively.
In Delaware, Ohio the other half of
the DU men's swimming squad routed the Bishops 131-57.Junior David Curtis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer)
led the way with a victory in the 200 freestyle. He was also a part of the winning 400 medley
relay team along with Charlie Grodecki (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), John Nameth
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Chris Sellon (Lawrence, Kan./Free State).
Freshman Alphonse Harris swam a time of 10:49.90 to win the
1000 yard freestyle and another rookie, Robert Meyers (Pittsburgh, Pa./North
Allegheny), took first in the 50 free in 22.64.
In the 400 IM Sellon and Andy Brabson (Boonsboro,
Md./Boonsboro) finished 1-2. Sophomore
Ed Kowal (Huntington, W.Va./Cabell Midland) took first in
the 200 fly while Nemeth and Grodecki were winners in the 100 free and 200
backstroke.
Junior Rory Scott (Street, Md./North Harford) rounded out
the Denison
winners with a victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.93.
