Men's Tennis: Denison competes at ITA Central Regional

Freshman Tyler Cempre (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) advanced to the quarterfinal round while senior Jordan Buehler (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and junior James Davis (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) made it to the third round of play to pace the Denison men's tennis team at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Central Regional hosted by Washington University.

Cempre opened up play with a three-set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) over Daniel Chang of Illinois Wesleyan and followed that up with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Transylvania's Keith Henderson. The freshman continued his run with victories over Bryan Heck of DePauw (6-4, 6-1) and Hope's John Pelton (6-0, 6-4). In his quarterfinal match, Cempre suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to fifth-seeded Will Zhang of Chicago.

Buehler won his first-round match 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Washington's Slavi Fildish. He continued his winning ways in the second and third rounds with victories over Kalamazoo's Tom Cafmeyer (7-5, 6-2) and Washington's Isaac Stein (6-4, 6-2). However, the senior was the first of two Big Red tennis players to be bounced by Zhang. Buehler dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Zhang.

Davis made it to the third round following wins over Jim Kucera of Baldwin-Wallace (6-2, 6-2) and Augustana's Adam DeSimone (7-6, 6-3). Davis dropped his third-round match to 12th-seeded Daniel Becker of Kenyon.

Other tennis athletes that recorded first-round wins were junior Adam Seeley (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall), sophomores Jared Connolly (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) and Evan Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), and first-years Matt McErlean (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Tim Martin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest).

In doubles action, the duos of Cempre and sophomore Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Buehler and Davis made it out to the third round of play. Cempre and Hobrath defeated the Washington University tandem of Eric Pollak and Corey Yealy by a score of 8-2 and followed that up with an 8-3 win over DePauw's Cam Huffman and T.J. MacMasters. Cempre and Hobrath fell 8-3 in their third-round match to second-seeded Charlie Brody and Mike Greenberg of Kenyon.

The ninth-seeded Buehler and Davis beat the Transy team of Clinton Colliver and Trevor Scott by a count of 8-4 and scored an 8-3 victory over Mark Bonner and Timmy Walsh of Chicago. The Denison duo fell in round three to Will Gates and Hunter Schouweiler of DePauw by a score of 8-5.

The team of Connolly and Verbofsky posted an 8-2 win over Baldwin-Wallace team of Andy Redd and Alex Trzeciak in their opening-round match but fell 8-2 to fifth-seeded Heck and Scott Swanson of DePauw.
