Men's Tennis: Denison advances to GLCA Semifinals

The Denison men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 Great Lakes College Association tournament with a first round victory over Wooster and a quarterfinal upset of Kalamazoo.
In the quarterfinal match-up against the region's sixth ranked team, Denison topped K-Zoo 5-4 thanks after winning 2-of-3 doubles matches and splitting singles play 3-3. Winning for Denison in singles was Randy Lofgren (West Chester, Ohio/Princeton) who went three sets to top Matt Wise, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 5, freshman Evan Verbosfsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) downed Pat Boyd 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 and Tom Hodgkiss-Lilly (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) topped Joe Unger 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play the veteran duo of Lofgren and Kevin Newman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) handled the region's 16th ranked doubles team of Jason Brown and Cyrus Jadun, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Hodgkiss-Lilly and Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) downed Tim Hubbard and Joe Unger, 8-3.
The win marked DU's first victory over the Hornets since 1997.
Earlier in the day Denison defeated The College of Wooster, 5-0.
Denison, who is ranked ninth in the central region will face the nation's seventh ranked team, Kenyon, on Saturday at a time to be determined.
