Dr. Brian Vincent Hortz, Denison '94, is now in his 10th year as the head athletic trainer and 12th year as an athletic trainer at Denison University. Hortz, 35, came to Denison in 1995 from Crooksville High School where he was head athletic trainer.
A native of nearby Heath, Ohio, Hortz graduated from Heath High School in 1990. Hortz's interest in sportsmedicine began when he was an undergraduate at Denison in the fall of 1990. From 1990 to 1994, he worked as a student athletic trainer under the mentorship of Denison's head athletic trainer, Dale S. Googins and graduated in 1994 with a B.A. in physical education with a concentration in sportsmedicine.
Upon graduation form DU, Hortz took the position of athletic trainer at Crooksville High School where was responsible for the care and treatment of all athletic teams in the Crooksville schools. While at Crooksville, he not only provided care for all athletes grades 7-12, but also pursued a master's degree in sportsmedicine from Ohio University. Hortz then continued his post-graduate studies at The Ohio State University where he completed his doctoral degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in health education.
Hortz's primary responsibilities at Denison University include the supervision and instruction of student athletic trainers, both in and out of the classroom, as a professor in Denison's department of athletics, physical education and recreation, as well as administrating the athletic training program at Denison.
Included among Dr. Hortz's professional affiliations are membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Great Lakes Athletic Association and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association. Dr. Hortz is also an active member in several Denison University committees.
Hortz and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Pataskala with their son, William.
