Women's Basketball: Kaiser named NCAC Player of the Year; Four earn All-NCAC honors

Shaina Kaiser

Sophomore wing Shaina Kaiser (Buckeye Valley, Ohio/Ostrander) was named North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was selected to the All-NCAC first team. Joining Kaiser on the first team are seniors Ellen O'Brien (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Carolyn Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto).

Kaiser became just the fifth player in the program's history to win conference Player of the Year. She led Denison in scoring (13.6) and finishing second on the team in rebounding (6.0) and assists (74). The sophomore also led the conference with a .481 three-point field goal percentage, which also set a new single-season school record. Kaiser was fourth in the league in field-goal percentage (.494), fifth in three-pointers per game (1.46) and eighth in scoring. The former NCAC Player of the Week (Feb. 8) exploded for a career-high 32 points at Wooster (Jan. 2). Against the Scots, she went 10-of-12 from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc, and was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. The Buckeye Valley, Ohio native also recorded a career-best seven thefts at Wooster.

O'Brien is making her second-straight first team All-NCAC appearance after becoming the Big Red's all-time career assist leader with 461 helpers. She also ranks third all time on the NCAC career assist list. The point guard finished her senior campaign second in the nation with a 4.37 assist/turnover ratio, and was runner-up in the conference in assists (4.54). She tied her career high of 12 assists against Wittenberg (Jan. 29). The Bethesda, Md. native also moved into fourth on the school's all-time steals list with 181 thefts. O'Brien finished her four-year career with 792 total points, 312 rebounds and a .451 shooting percentage.

Earning her second first team all-league selection, Simpson became just the ninth player in school history to eclipse 1,000-career points and only the third to grab over 700 rebounds this season. The senior post player is fourth on the Denison all-time scoring list (1,257) and ranks second, behind former teammate Kristen Sheffield, in rebounds (799). Simpson also finished her career second on the conference career blocks list behind Sheffield with 165 rejections. The Dublin, Ohio native also set a new school record for highest field-goal percentage in a career after shooting .499 (490-of-982) during her four year tenure in Granville. This season Simpson led the conference in rebounding (8.8) and was second in the NCAC in blocked shots (43). She recorded six double-doubles, scored a career-high 23 points against Oberlin (Feb. 24) and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against both Staten Island (Dec. 27) and Kenyon (Feb. 11).

Senior wing Sarah Perrine (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) was selected to the honorable mention all-conference squad after finishing her four-year career with the second highest free throw percentage for a career in DU history (.784). The senior also moved into third on the school's all-time three-point field goal list with 118 treys. The former NCAC Player of the Week (Jan. 11) closed out her career with 930 points, 281 rebounds, 108 assists and 66 steals. The Springfield, Ohio native shot .903 (28-of-31) from the foul line for the season and averaged 8.3 ppg.

The Big Red finished the season 19-7 overall and won their second NCAC regular season crown this year. Denison also won a record-setting 16 consecutive contests, breaking the previous mark of 15 set back in the 2006-07 season.
