Women's Basketball: Simpson leads Big Red to sixth straight victory

Carolyn Simpson's 16 points and 14 rebounds helped DU record a 22-point win at Kenyon on Wednesday.
Senior Carolyn Simpson's (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) double-double helped the Denison women's basketball team capture a 71-49 win over Kenyon College on Wednesday night in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Simpson finished the night with 16 points and 14 rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
After falling into an early first-half hole, the Big Red took a 7-6 lead on a three pointer by senior Sarah Perrine (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) with 14 minutes left in the opening frame. Down 8-7 later in the period, DU rattled off 12 consecutive points to take a 19-8 lead. Denison lead by as much as 15 (33-18) in the first half before taking a 33-20 advantage into the intermission.
The Big Red blew the game open in the second half as they held a double-digit lead for the entire 20 minutes of play. Senior Katie St. Clair (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) and sophomore Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) each scored nine points in the second frame while Simpson pulled down eight of her 14 boards in the period.
Denison converted 45 percent (27-of-60) from the floor on the night and out rebounded the Ladies 48-36.
In addition to Simpson's double-double, St. Clair finished with 16 tallies and nine rebounds while Kaiser chipped in 11 points and Perrine dropped 10. Senior Ellen O'Brien (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), who entered the week ranked fifth in the nation with a 3.0 assist turnover ratio, dished out a game-high four assists which improved her assist turnover ratio to 3.05.
Kathleen Williams paced Kenyon with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Elana Carlson notched eight tallies.
The
Big Red improves to 9-6 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the NCAC while
Kenyon falls to 5-11 on the year and 4-4 in the league. DU returns to
action on Saturday when they host conference foe Allegheny College.
Tip-off at Livingston Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
