Carolyn Simpson registered 21 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks en route to the Big Red's 70-45 win over Kenyon. Simpson is now second on the NCAC's all-time career blocks list (159) behind former teammate Kristen Sheffield.
Senior post Carolyn Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) notched her fourth double-double of the season en route to a 70-45 Denison victory over the Kenyon College Ladies on Wednesday night in Granville. Simpson finished the game with 21 points on 8-of-9 (89 percent) from the field, a season-high tying16 rebounds and a season-high six blocks.
With her six blocks, Simpson moved into second on the North Coast Athletic Conference's all-time career list behind former teammate Kristen Sheffield (2003-07). The Dublin, Ohio native currently has 159 rejections in her career.
Although the team shot 10-for-32 (31 percent) from the field, the opening half belonged to Simpson. The senior post went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field en route to a 13-point first period. She also pulled down eight boards and stuffed four shots in the opening 20 minutes.
After jumping out to a 10-4 lead, Kenyon posted a 9-0 spurt that was capped off by a Suzanne Kahle trey. However, senior wing Caitlin Graessle (Galloway, Ohio/Bishop Ready) answered back with a triple of her own to knot the game at 13-13. Over the next six minutes DU opened up another four-point lead (19-13), before a Morgan Korinek lay-up trimmed the margin to four. The Big Red opened up their first double-digit lead of the game after a Simpson three (25-25) before taking a 27-20 advantage into the intermission
Like it has so many times this season, the second half belonged to Denison. The home team rattled off nine unanswered points to open up a 36-20 lead in the first 2:18 of the second frame. The Ladies were able to cut the lead to 15 on two separate occasions, but the potent Big Red offense was too much to handle as then took home the 25-point win and improved to 14-0 in the NCAC.
One of the highlights in a lopsided second half came at the 7:45 mark. Senior Sarah Perrine (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) connected on her second three-pointer of the contest which moved her into third place on Denison's all-time three-point field goal list. Perrine currently has 114 triples as a member of the Big Red.
Denison finished the night 26-for-66 (39 percent) from the floor while Kenyon shot 17-for-67 (25 percent). The big difference was the performance from behind the arc as the Big Red shot 42 percent (10-of-24) while the Ladies only converted 21 percent (4-of-19). Kenyon out rebounded DU 50-45, but committed 15 turnovers which resulted in 16 Big red tallies.
Aiding Simpson were Graessle, who finished with nine points, and seniors Ellen O'Brien (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Katie St. Clair (Granger, Ind. St. Joseph's), who each chipped in seven. O'Brien also added four steals.
Korinek led Kenyon with 12 points and 12 boards while Kahle finished the night with 10 tallies. Elana Carlson also contributed nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
Denison (16-6) returns to action next Wednesday (Feb. 18) when they travel to Earlham College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
