A hot second-half start helped propel the Denison women's basketball team to a 64-41 victory over Oberlin College on Saturday at Phillips Gym in Oberlin. The win marked the Big Red's fifth in a row and sixth consecutive in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Even though the Big Red only converted 22 percent (8-of-37) from the floor in the first half, DU was still able to take a 25-24 lead into the intermission. The Yeomen went on an 11-2 first-half run to erase an 11-6 deficit half way through the opening frame. The two teams played the entire half close, and with 1:36 left before the half sophomore Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) gave Denison a one-point advantage with a pair of free throws.
The Big Red exploded out of the locker room and opened the second half by outscoring Oberlin 16-2. The run built up a 15 point lead and secured the game for Denison. After struggling from the floor in the first period, the Big Red shot an impressive 11-for-26 (42 percent) from the floor en route outscoring the Yeowomen 39-17 in the second period.
The senior duo of Katie St. Clair (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) and Carolyn Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) paced DU in the win. St. Clair dropped a season-high 13 tallies while Simpson scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Simpson's 11 points moved her past Emma Woodward and into sixth-place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,082 points. Sophomore Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) also chipped in 11 points while classmate Lindsay Henry (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) grabbed nine rebounds.
For the Yeowomen, Alyssa Clark recorded 14 points and seven boards while Syrea Thomas added seven tallies.
Denison improves to 8-6 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the NCAC with the win while Oberlin falls to 3-11 on the year and 1-5 in the league. The Big Red travels to Gambier, Ohio on Wednesday to take on Kenyon College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
