Carolyn Simpson recorded 23 points and 13 rebounds in Denison's 99-47 victory over Oberlin in the quarterfinals of the NCAC Tournament on Tuesday evening.
The Denison women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament after posting a 99-41 victory over Oberlin College on Tuesdsay night at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville. The victory marks the Big Red's 16th in a row, which sets a new school record for consecutive victories.
After falling behind 7-6 in the opening stages of the first half, DU rattled off 18 straight points over almost five minute to build up a 17-point advantage. The Big Red continued to put on the pressure as they expanded their lead to as many as 32, on two separate occasions, before entering the locker room with a 53-22 lead.
Denison shot 51 percent (21-of-41) from the field and 60 percent (6-of-10) from long range in the first frame while the Yeowomen were 8-of-28 from the floor (29 percent). Senior Carolyn Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) led all players at the half with 16 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) chipped in 15 tallies and six boards.
The second half saw the Big Red continue to pour it on. Although Denison only shot 36 percent (13-of-36) from the field in the second frame, a 16-of-22 (73 percent) performance from the charity stripe countered the shooting struggles and helped propel DU to the 52-point victory.
The Big Red finished the night 34-of-77 (44 percent) from the floor and 21-of-31 (68 percent) from the foul line while the Yeowomen shot 18-of-59 (31 percent) from the field. DU also held an 56-34 edge on the glass and scored 29 points off 18 Oberlin turnovers.
Simpson notched her second straight double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds while Kaiser finished with 18 and senior Caitlin Graessle (Galloway, Ohio/Bishop Ready) chipped in 16.
Oberlin was led by Syrea Thomas and Alyssa Clark who scored 10 and 9 points, respectively. Emily Chu Finkel and January Baker each pulled down six rebounds.
With the win, the top-seeded Big Red will host the semifinals and finals of the NCAC Tournament on Friday (Feb. 27) and Saturday (Feb. 28). Friday's semifinals will kick off when third-seeded Allegheny takes on second-seeded Kenyon at 6 p.m. The nightcap will feature fourth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan and Denison at 8 p.m. The two semifinal winners will return to Livingston Gymnasium for the NCAC Tournament finals on Saturday at 7 p.m.
