Shaina Kaiser scored 30 points to lead Denison to a 76-71 victory over Ohio Wesleyan.
Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored 30 points and Ellen O'Brien (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) became the program's all-time leader in assists as the Big Red held off Ohio Wesleyan 76-71 at Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio on Friday night.
O"Brien entered the game needing just three assists to pass Bridget Collerain for the career-lead in assists. She would accomplish that feat midway through the second half when she notched one of her season-high six steals and found Kaiser open for a fast-break lay-up which pushed the Big Red lead to eight with 12 minutes to play.
After trailing 39-37 the half, the Denison lead would grow to as much as 12 with just over nine minutes to play. The Big Red would remain in control until the Bishops mounted a comeback that was fueled by a rash of Denison turnovers. Ohio Wesleyan's Tyler Cordell got the run started when she cut the DU lead to seven with 4:35 to play. A Dany Finck basket and back-to-back 3-pointers by Kayla Gordon would get OWU to within one at 70-69 with 2:17 to play.
The Big Red would commit their sixth turnover in four minutes but a Pam Quigney miss followed by a Kaiser 3-pointer gave the Big Red a 4-point advantage with 1:20 to play. O'Brien would go on to connect on 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to preserve Denison's perfect record in conference play.
The 30-point outburst was the second of the season for Kaiser. She scored a career-high 32 points against The College of Wooster on Jan. 2. Kaiser was 10-for-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in 32 minutes. She also added six rebounds and three assists.
O'Brien finished with six assists, six steals and a season-high 14 points in 35 minutes. She did not commit a turnover and in doing so, raised her assist/turnover ratio to 3.92. O'Brien entered the week ranked fourth in all of NCAA Division III in assist/turnover ratio. Despite battling foul trouble, Denison senior Carolyn Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) scored nine points and led the way with eight rebounds in 22 minutes. Simpson was 5-for-8 from the field.
Ohio Wesleyan was led by Katie Hamilton's 18 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. She was one of four Bishops to reach double figures in the scoring column.
DU was outrebounded 46-36 but shot 46 percent from the field compared to just 37 percent for Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops did manage to knock down 10 3-point field goals.
The victory extends Denison's winning streak to 11 games and improves their record to 14-6 overall and 12-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Ohio Wesleyan falls to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in confefence play. DU will return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 7) when they host Oberlin College at 7:30 p.m.
