Tennis coach Peter Burling enters his 20th year as head of the men's tennis team and his 11th year leading the women's squad in 2009-10. Bringing a tremendous amount of experience and leadership to the tennis programs, Burling has been at the head of a continuously winning tradition.

In 2009 the Denison University women's tennis program returned to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third straight season after posting a 16-7 record. The Big Red pushed eventual national champion Williams to the limit before dropping a 5-4 decision.  Additionally, the doubles tandem of Marta Drane and Kristin Cobb reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championships, while Meghan Damico was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Senior Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

The 2008 season marked a breakthrough year for the women's tennis program at Denison University.  The team posted a 22-4 record and finished a program-best, third place at the NCAA Division III Championships.  After making three previous trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals, the Big Red defeated Emory University to advance to the national semifinals for the first time.  In addition to their third place team finish, the doubles team of Marta Drane and Kristin Cobb were the 2008 NCAA Division III runners-up in doubles play. 

The 2007 men's squad finished with a record of 14-8 and posted a 7-1 record in conference play. The doubles team of Kevin Newman and Randy Lofgren advanced to the NCAA Championships and the team ended the season ranked in the region.

Under Burling's guidance, the women have gone 170-52over the past nine seasons and they have not lost a North Coast Athletic Conference match in eight years, spanning eight consecutive conference championships. In all, they have gone 54-2 in conference play with Burling as the head coach. A eight-time NCAC Coach of the Year and the 2005 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year, 2009 marked Denison's eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.

The men's team, which Burling has invested nearly two decades in, has also met a tremendous amount of success under his leadership. He has garnered the NCAC Coach of the Year award in 1992, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2006. Coach Burling has also been named NCAA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year and USPTA Midwest Coach of the Year.

The 2009 DU men's tennis squad went 16-5 including a perfect 4-0 mark in NCAC West action.  They made it all the way to the NCAC Championship match before falling to Kenyon.  The Big Red finished the season ranked 22nd nationally and seventh in the central region. 

The 2008 Denison men's tennis team posted a 14-7 record and were 7-1 in conference play.  They ended the season ranked 26th nationally and ninth in the midwest region.  The doubles team of Kevin Newman and Randy Lofgren advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship for the third time and the team placed second in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. 

Burling, originally from Orleans, Massachusetts, currenly resides in Granville with his wife Patricia. He has two sons, Scott and Colin.
