Field Hockey: Overtime goal lifts Wittenberg past Big Red

Lauren Keny scored her fourth goal of the season for DU against Wittenberg on Thursday.
Meredith Price found Boo Vernon for the game-winning goal 3:47 into the first overtime period as Wittenberg rallied for a 2-1 victory over Denison on Thursday afternoon from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
After the Big Red controlled the tempo in the second half, Wittenberg stormed out of the gates in overtime. The six-on-six worked to the strengths of the Tiger's offense and on their second penalty corner of the sudden victory OT, Price found and open Vernon who let loose a rocket that found the back of the goal.
The Tigers took the lead off a short corner goal in the first half when Tori Vogelgesang hit Price for the firt goal of the game. The score would remain 1-0 until Denison's Lauren Keny (Bexley, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) scored her fourth goal of the season off a nice deflection from Liz Hubbard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) via another short corner.
DU outshot Wittenberg 9-8 in the second half and took nine penalty corners to the Tigers' two in the period. Big Red goalkeeper Kait Fiore (Milburn, N.J./Milburn) turned in seven saves in the game while Wittenberg's Alyssa Ashbaugh had five. Overall, Wittenberg edged Denison in shot attempts, 16-14.
The Big Red will continue their NCAC schedule next Wednesday when they travel to Wooster for a 4:30 p.m. meeting with the Fighting Scots.
