A penalty stroke conversion by Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) would set the tone for Denison as the Big Red would hold on for a much needed 2-0 victory versus Transylvania University on Saturday from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
McCue got Denison on the board quickly when she went high on Transy goalie Megan Blandford, putting DU on top 1-0 just 1:59 into the contest. Denison was awarded the penalty stroke after a foul was called on Blandford while attempting to save a shot attempt by Denison's Lauren Keny (Bexley, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls).
Denison would continue to cling to their one-goal lead over the next 45 minutes until the Big Red would execute a penalty corner attempt to perfection. With just over 23 minutes left in regulation, junior Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) sent the ball into play from the left end line. He pass was accepted by Kelsey Flowers who fed senior Caitlin Gilman (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) for her first goal of the season.
DU outshot the Pioneers 12-8 as Big Red goalie Kait Fiore (Milburn, N.J./Milburn) recorded five saves and played all 70 minutes in the cage to pick up her first career shutout victory. Blandford also finished with five saves for Transy.
Denison (3-10) will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Thursday when they host Wittenberg University at 4:30 p.m.
