Field Hockey: Five goal first half pushes Wittenberg past Big Red

Wittenberg University tallied five first-half goals en route to a 9-3 victory over the Denison field hockey team in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday.
It took less then a minute for the Tigers to find the back of the net when Darcey Caciano notched an unassisted score to give Wittenberg an early 1-0 advantage. Tori Casanta registered back-to-back goals to increase the Tigers lead to 3-0 early in the match. Meredith Price and Boo Vernon also tallied scores in the opening period for Wittenberg.
With 13:47 left in the first half, junior Lauren Keny (Bexley, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) notched her third goal of the season to trim the margin to 5-1 heading into the intermission.
Casanta and Vernon each tacked on a score to give the Tigers their largest lead of the contest at 7-1.
Freshman Kelly Whipple (Ridgefield, Conn./St. Luke's) scored an unassisted goal for DU with 11:45 remaining in the match. Thirty second later, junior Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) closed the gap to 7-3 with an unassisted tally.
Taylor Dawley registered Wittenberg's eighth goal of the contest with just under eight minutes remaining and Casanta completed her hat trick at the 5:15 mark to secure the Tigers' 9-3 win.
Wittenberg outshot the Big Red 23-8. First-year goalkeeper Kait Fiore (Milburn, N.J./Milburn) made 13 saves for Denison while Alyssa Ashbaugh and Jenny Schaafsma combined for two stops for the Tigers.
The Big Red falls to 2-10 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC. DU returns to action Saturday (Oct. 11) when they host Transylvania at 1 p.m.
