Field Hockey: Overtime goal sends OWU past Big Red
| Date | September 9, 2009 |
| Location | GRANVILLE |
Ohio Wesleyan's Macie Miller scored two minutes into the first overtime to clinch a 2-1 victory for the Battling Bishops over the Denison Big Red from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
The Battling Bishops struck first when Christa Cocumelli scored via a penalty stroke in the fifth minute of play. The score would remain 1-0, in favor of the Bishops until the 61st minute when first-year forward Catie Merrick scored her team-high sixth goal of the season.
Merrick found the back of the cage after gathering the ball following a shot by teammate Molly McCue. McCue's attempt was saved by OWU goalie Krista Murray but Merrick was in the right place at the right time to send a bullet past the diving OWU netminder.
Denison finished with seven shots while the Bishops managed nine total shots. Denison goalie Brittany Benson had four saves while Murray finished with two saves for OWU.
The loss drops the Big Red's record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Battling Bishops improve to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) when they travel to Oberlin College for a 12 p.m. start.
