Field Hockey: DePauw's two first half goals enough to top Big Red
Date: Sept. 22, 2007
Location: GRANVILLE
Read Powel scored her second goal of the season in Saturday's 2-1 loss to DePauw.
DePauw's Carolyn Mueller scored two first half goals and accounted for 10 of her team's 14 total shots en route to a 2-1 victory over the Big Red field hockey team on Saturday morning in Granville.
Mueller got DePauw on the board quickly when Jackie Smith found her in front of the goal in the 11th minute of the contest. On her fifth shot attempt of the half, Mueller would put the Tigers up 2-0 with 3:33 left in the period.
In the second half DePauw controlled the ball for much of the period. With 2:33 remaining senior Read Powel (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) got Denison within one goal via an assist by senior Brittany Paquette (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett). The goal was Powel's second of the season.
Now, down one with just over two minutes to play, DU went on the offensive. With under a minute Denison was in position to take a shot attempt but a foul and turnover sent the ball DePauw's direction where time eventually expired.
DePauw goalie Liz Atwell stopped one DU shot on the day. Denison took six total shots compared to 14 for the Tigers. Big Red goalkeeper Halle Minshall (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) posted eight saves.
Denison's next opponent will be The College of Wooster on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in Granville. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. On Sept. 12 the Big Red defeated the Scots 2-1 in penalty strokes, in Wooster.
