Field Hockey: DU Downs Wooster in Strokes

The Denison field hockey team earned their first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season by topping the College of Wooster 2-1 in penalty strokes.
The two teams played 70 minutes of regulation to a 1-1 tie. After 30 minutes of overtime two two team's were still knotted at 1-1 so the match went to a stroke-off where the Big Red blanked the Fighting Scots 3-0. Wooster's first attempt by Stephanie Standera was saved by DU goalkeeper Halle Minshall (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights). Read Powel (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) followed with a conversion for Denison. Following a Wooster miss that clanged off the right post, Denison's Emily Marshall (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manuel) scored. Wooster's third and final attempt went wide left and Brittany Paquette's (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) score sealed up the win for the Big Red.
Denison got on the board first with 22 minutes left in the first half after an unassisted goal by sophomore Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) off an assist by Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy). Denison would hold on to the lead until 54th minute when Wooster's Briana Lynch tied the match off a Piper Annese assist. After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, Wooster outshot Denison 2-0 in the first overtime but Denison came back with three shots to the Scots' two in the second OT. Overall, Wooster finished with 19 shots and four defensive saves while DU took 11 shots and were helped by Claire Kase's (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) two defensive saves.
Minshall posted seven saves for Denison while Wooster goalkeeper Izzy Maffetone finished with five saves. Denison's record improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC while Wooster's record dips to 1-3 and 0-2 in conference play.
