Read Powel scored off a penalty stroke vs. #6 Salisbury
The Denison
field hockey team began play at the 2007 Salisbury Invitational with a 4-1 loss
to the host, Sea Gulls.
Salisbury,
ranked sixth in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division
III poll, scored first when Kandice Hancock scored off a penalty corner in the
10th minute.
Two minutes later DU knotted the score at 1-1 when Read
Powel (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway
Brown) scored her first goal of the season via a penalty stroke. The score would remain tied until the 22nd
minute when Beverly Beladino scored her first of what would be two consecutive
goals that would push the Gulls out to a 3-1 lead.
With seven minutes left in regulation Salisbury's
Danielle Twilley rounded out the scoring with her third goal of the year.Denison
attempted two shots on the morning and took three penalty corners.First-year goalie Halle Minshall (Shaker
Heights, Ohio/Shaker
Heights) posted seven saves in 70 minutes and Claire
Kase added one defensive save.
Denison's afternoon match versus Eastern Mennonite went about the same way. EMU got off to a quick start when Lauren Derstine scored just 22 seconds into the contest. Denison's Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) countered in the second minute when she scored off an assist from Kristen Schneider. The match would remain deadlocked at 1-1 until the 57th minute when Derstine scored her second of what would be three goals in the match. EMU would tack on two more scores to seal up the 4-1 victory.
DU will take on SUNY-Brockport on Sunday at 9 a.m. in the final match of the Salisbury Invitational.
