Date: October 18, 2007
Location: GRANVILLE

Wittenberg scored two quick goals to begin the second half and freshman goalie Liana Began held off a furious Denison charge in the waning minutes of the half, preserving a 2-1 victory over the Big Red at Piper Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Denison jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Brittany Paquette (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) scored off an unassisted goal following a missed shot attempt by teammate Read Powel (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) off a penalty corner.

Three minutes into the second half Wittenberg's Tori Casanta tied the match off an assist by Alison Voigt.  Less than two minutes later the Tigers' Hannah Scheckelhoff gave Wittenberg the lead.

As time continued to tick the Big Red had their chances.  They forced eight penalty corners in the second half and with 4:50 remaining Powel spanked a shot from inside the circle that caromed off Began's shin pad.

DU also had the ball in front of the goal with under a minute to play.  Senior Carter Hartung (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) had a shot that was also saved by Began.  Denison outshot Wittenberg 17-11 and Began finished the day with nine saves.  DU goalie Halle Minshall (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) posted six saves of her own.

The loss drops Denison's record to 5-11 overall and 4-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.  Wittenberg improves to 8-6 and 5-4 in the NCAC.

The match was DU's final home game of the season.  Prior to the match the four senior members of the Big Red team were honored.  They are Katie Grunst (North Versailles, Pa./The Ellis School), Paquette, Powel and Hartung.
