Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin shared the 2009 NCAC Indoor Track & Field Championship.
For the first time in the 25 years of the North Coast Athletic Conference two teams walked away from the Indoor Track & Field Championships victorious. The Ohio Wesleyan University and Oberlin College women both tallied 138 points to share the conference crown.
Heading into the final event the Battling Bishops sat two points back (130-128) in the standings and needed to to finish in front of the Yeowomen. Thanks to a phenomenal anchor leg by Sarah Shin that's exactly what OWU did as they won the 4x400 relay. Oberlin took second in the race, finishing just two seconds behind Ohio Wesleyan.
The Battling Bishops' relay team of Rowena Jones, Rachael Newman, Kara Reiter and Shin crossed the line at 4:08.47 while the OC group of Ali Gemma, Laura Vernon, Amanda Miller and Madeline Schultz logged a time of 4:10.46.
Allegheny's Beth Muller was named NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year after claiming victory in three events. Muller won the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.99 and then followed that up with victories in the 55-meter dash (7.48) and the 200 (26.41).
Nicole Ouellet of Oberlin took home the NCAC Middle/Distance Runner of the Year award after winning both the mile and the 800-meter run. Ouellet logged a time of 5:15.89 in the one mile and returned later in the day to post a mark of 2:19.37 in the 800 meters.
Wooster's Kayla Miller received NCAC Field Athlete of the Year honors after placing first in Friday's triple jump. The senior recorded a combined leap of 34-09.75 which was over a foot longer then second place.
In the long jump, Gemma took home the title with a leap of 15-06.00, just an inch farther then Shinn (15-05.00). Gemma also took home a victory as a member of the Oberlin's 4x200 relay team. The foursome of Gemma, Vernon, Schultz and Miller finished the race in a time of 1:50.24.
The Scots' Katelynn Riley took home the 55-meter hurdles title with a time of 8.76, while Elizabeth Ross of Earlham cleared 5-01.75 en route to a victory in the high jump.
Allegheny's Mia Symoniak won the 3,000-meter run with a mark of 10:15.08 while the Gator distance medley relay team of Samantha Zink, Lauren Heltman, Angie Dyer and Katie Stancik crossed the line in 13:06.27 en route to a first-place finish.
After setting a school record in the 5,000 on Friday night, Denison sophomore Katie Navarre returned on Saturday to finish third in the 3,000, setting a new Denison record with a time of 10:18.39.
Ohio Wesleyan's Kris Boey and Oberlin's Ray Appenheimer shared Coach of the Year honors in the post championship awards ceremony.
